66 DAYS OF METAL
PURPOSE
The main interest behind this project was my long term obsession with heavy metal music, this obsession led me to learn graphic design in the first place. My purpose behind this project is to give something back to the community, since it helped me shape my career around it, and create awareness about the role design plays in music and vice versa.
Also, I thought it would be a good exercise that would help me showcase my lettering skills and showcase heavy metal design culture.
Unlike any other design styles, heavy metal has its own visual style and aesthetics, which makes it stand out, makes it more relatable and connects well with its audience. Through this project, I got to explore the heavy metal design culture and how it differs from different sub-genres within metal music.
APPROACH
My approach towards the project started out by creating a mood board on Pinterest, I created a library of reference images of logos, album cover artworks, and color palettes. Further filtered those images and made another mood board, which was much more defined. This served as the groundwork for the whole project.
Next, I had to come up with the band-names, since I wasn’t redesigning it had to be new ones. I started going through the lyrics of the songs, started picking out interesting words. I made a list of those words that I picked up. And started defining those names and segregating them into different genres.
Once the list was complete I started sketching out ideas on Illustrator. Refined them over and over, making sure it would work on black and white, then added colors based on its personality assigned to it. This process was repeated over time, every day for 66 days.
SCHEDULE
The whole project took me around 2 months to come up with 66 logos. Somedays I did more than 2 or 3 logos per day, just in case if I was lagging behind schedule, so that I could catch up with the pace, and finish the project on time.
WRAP
My expectations from the project were to come up with 66 logotypes that were unique, distinct and had a personality of its own, yet making its own mark, and speaking to its audience.
OUTCOME
As a result of all the work that went in, and following the process diligently, I was able to execute the project on time, also I believe I was successful in coming up with at least 60 unique logotypes, which had a personality of their own.
